Julie Kaldenhoven

Biography:

As a child, my imagination was fired by the bright colours, patterns and golden icons of a traditional Ukrainian upbringing. A visually curious little girl, I would spend long hours in quiet contemplation of all things colourful and interesting, gathering inspiration for a lifelong love of art.

In 1993, I received my Fine Art diploma (with Distinction) from Grant MacEwan College. My paintings, including several commissioned portraits, are held in private and public collections across Alberta. An acrylic painter primarily, I also experiment with various approaches to artmaking, such as drawing, encaustics, sculpture, collage, printmaking, and digital art.

My subject matter ranges from still life and portraits to florals to landscapes. More recently, I have worked with digital photo manipulation, transparency and pattern to create layered images, as well as painting in encaustics.

I am a resident artist at the Visual Arts Studio Association (VASA), but my ‘messy’ experimenting is done in my home studio in north Edmonton.

My art is an explorations of my roots, bringing together past and present, old and new, real  and unreal, life and spirit.
