Get Ready to Paint the Town Red!

Kicking off Alberta Culture Days in Morinville, Paint the Town Red, the fifth annual Celebrating Life and Culture Gala will be held on September 26, 2014 at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre (MCCC).  The event will exhibit artwork from local artists while raising funds for the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation (SCHF).

Paint the Town Red theme was conceived last year by moving the event to a Friday and encouraged attendees to wear red or shades of red such as maroon or pink to show support for our Military.  The Gala will include a special performance by the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) Drum Line.  Performing what is called “stick drill” under florescent black light using drumsticks that are painted fluorescent orange it is best viewed in pitch-black.  2014 is the 100th Anniversary of the PPCLI.

Participating artists selling their work will be required to purchase a ticket to the event to participate and donate a minimum of twenty percent of all art sales to benefit the SCHF.  Curators Tara Ricioppo and Karen Cassidy will jury all artist submissions.  Youth are encouraged to submit artwork for sale at the fundraiser but they will not be able to attend the event so they will not be required to purchase a ticket.  Tax receipts will be issued by the SCHF to artists for the full portion of donations through sales of their art.

The deadline for artists to register for the event is September 15, 2014 however earlier submissions are requested.  Artwork submissions may include collographs, drawings, mixed media, paintings, photographs, and sculpture but is not limited to those techniques.  Submissions must be ready to hang or display and labelled with artist and title on the back or in the case of sculpture on the bottom of the artwork.  Artists are encouraged to have business cards on hand at the event.

The artwork drop off will be on September 23, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the mezzanine at the MCCC.  The art will continue to be on display after the Gala until October 16, 2014 unless purchased.  Last year 39 artists enthusiastically took part in the opportunity to showcase their artwork.  For artist submission forms please e-mail Tara Ricioppo at to participate in the event.  The artists are free to submit any art of their choosing it does not have to reflect the theme.

A champagne reception is planned with hors d’oeuvres served during the evening.  Wine tasting will be back by popular demand.  Beer and wine sales along with non-alcoholic beverages will be available.  Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring the Gala please contact Barb Hodge, SCHF Administration and Special Events at 780-418-7361 or Dolly Bolen, Event Chairperson at 780-572-2603.

Attendees will have a chance to honour our Military by experiencing, sharing and celebrating our national treasure our Canadian Troops and culture together at Paint the Town Red.  Tickets to the Gala are $35.00 per person and are now on sale at SCHF in St. Albert, Terrae Pines Golf and Country Club on Hwy 2, Highstreet Interiors, Home Hardware, Pro-Level Looks Hair Salon, and Green Bean Coffee House & Bistro in Morinville.
