Art in Public Places: St. Albert, Call for Artists ITT13-0042
25 (VASA) and 29 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue
Proposal submission deadline – June 27, 2013

COMPETITION: The City of St. Albert is pleased to announce a competition for two public artworks. The artworks are funded through the St. Albert 150th Anniversary Celebration Legacy Grant and the Public Art Lifecycle and Maintenance Fund.  The City of St. Albert seeks proposals and qualifications from experienced artists or artist teams with a demonstrated ability to produce permanent outdoor public art.

The primary goal/theme of the two thematically and visually connected artworks is to challenge artists to envision the Spirit of St. Albert in the 21st Century. The subject was chosen to commemorate a recently removed artwork, by Tag Kim which was titled “The Spirit of St. Albert, 1995″. The effects of time and weather necessitated the removal of the artwork in 2011. The artwork depicted a day in the life of St. Albert citizens at that time. The Spirit of St. Albert in the 21st Century artwork should consider what distinguishes St. Albert as a destination City in the present and how the community will grow that spirit in the future.

A secondary theme that may also be incorporated is that the artwork may reflect the City of St. Albert’s commitment to its botanical arts brand promise. St. Albert’s brand promise states: “As The Botanical Arts City, St. Albert truly embodies a sustainable living philosophy. St. Albert is a community renowned for its botanical arts, its commitment to a green lifestyle and the cultivation of activities that provide for a well-rounded quality of life.”

Artists are encouraged to consider using sustainable materials and/or reusing, and recycling materials for this project. Rough materials from The City of St. Albert Public Works Yard and/or Recycle Depot, if required by the artist, are available from the City of St. Albert free of charge for the artist’s use in the project as per availability.
The artworks will be installed at two separate locations as follows:

1. The South East boulevard of the Hemingway Centre located at 25 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue, St. Albert, Alberta. The Hemingway Centre is the current home of the Visual Art Studio Association (VASA); and

2. The South West boulevard of the City of St. Albert Business Office, at 29 Sir Winston Churchill Avenue, which houses Office of Community Sustainability and Economic Development Division for the City of St. Albert.

ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to local, regional and national artists who have completed relevant training, an apprenticeship or a recognized body of work in visual arts, and meet the requirements of the competition.
